Camped at Diamond Caverns, KY near Mammoth Cave.

After setting up camp at Diamond Caverns Campground Saturday afternoon, we ventured to the Mammoth Cave visitor center. Time slots for tours are reserved in advanced so we purchased two tickets for Kellen and Cesare to attend the Historical tour. Cesare bought four tickets for the Frozen Niagara early Sunday morning. Our tour of Frozen Niagara starts at 11:30 am and 1:15 pm for the Historical Tour. Saturday night dinner was had by campfire followed by a little TV and card games.

I must say KY is GORGEOUS. Who says Montana is Big Sky country. It is like one is immersed in a Bob Ross painting. See the Kentucky Sky.

On to Diamond Caverns RV Resort

Today is sunny and cool. Our drive is 164 miles to next campsite, but stopping at Lincoln's birth place on the way. Here are Carina and Kellen just before leaving Three Springs.

Arrived in Corinth, KY

Here we are at Three Springs Campground (48 miles south of Cincinnati) about to set sail on the Ark Encounter. This morning breakfast was had at Tudor's Biscuit World, a chain restaurant spanning Ohio, Kentucky and WV. Their selection of biscuit sandwiches is nothing I have never seen before. Michele got the "Politician", a biscuit sandwich with bologna, egg and cheese.

We encountered the Ark (full size replica of Noah's Ark) in the afternoon and I must say it was an impressive experience and a must see.

 

We returned to the campsite afterwards, but with some added excitement. A huge thunderstorm of 

biblical proportions loomed over the Ark upon departure. Needless to say it was rather ironic. We had to make a stop for drinks and ice before returning to the campsite. We stopped at a Walmart 15 miles north of Three Springs as the storm let loose. The drive back was somewhat scary. Upon return, we stayed in, had dinner and watch some TV during the remainder of the evening. 

One night layover in Argillite, KY

Here we are near Grayson at the KOA.

We arrive Thursday afternoon to set up camp for the evening.  Campfire was out of the question due to rain. We ventured to Grayson for dinner looking for Chinese food, but really wanted to try this place called Tudor Biscuit World.  They have very limited business hours and missed our opportunity to dine there. We stay in for the evening playing cards and watched movies.

Leaving for Ashland/Huntington KOA with final impression of WV.

Today we pack up and head for Kentucky to the Ashland/Huntington KOA, http://koa.com/campgrounds/ashland/.  The drive is 169 miles from here.

Final thoughts of WV
This is a beautiful state to visit with the mountains and rolling hills, beautiful greenery and rivers. Here's a list of words that were obvious when you drive through WV: trucks, motorcycles, four-wheelers, RVs, wind farms, tractors, breathable air, churches, confederate flags, historic small towns, gardens, ranches, stacked firewood, and no street lights. Stonewall Resort is a beautiful place to stay especially in the resort lodge. We may consider coming back here. As far as Milleson Walnut Grove campground, we weren't impressed with its lack of running water and dirt road. WV was an adventure.

Easy Day at Stonewall Resort

Today got off to a slow start, Kellen and I drove to the nearest town (12 miles) of Weston, WV for supplies. There we found a Walmart for some food and drink. Upon our return, Kellen and I rented kayaks for a leisurely hour on the lake. Michele and Carina inspected the resort. After the festivites we returned to the RV for a Taco Wednesday feast and Youtube. Luckily, the wifi does work here in this park and I am able to update this blog.

On to Stonewall Resort for the Fourth of July

Today we drove to Roanoke WV to Stonewall Resort. http://www.stonewallresort.com/.  WOW, this place is nice with its waterfront campsites and gorgeous lakes views. We were pretty tired upon arrival, so needless to say we laid low for the evening. We made a traditional Fourth of July dinner of hamburgers and hot dogs with baked beans. No fireworks here.

Continuation of Milleson, WV.

In the afternoon of July 3, we traveled 75 miles to Blackwater Falls in Davis, WV. It was well worth the drive to see it. On our way back we saw the smallest chapel, Our Lady of the Pines. est. 1958 which seats twelve people comfortably and post office in the 48 states,  Upon our return to the campsite, we made a lovely dinner of grilled catfish, mashed cauliflower and Caesar salad. Finished the night off with a game of frisbee with Kellen and Carina, a beer and a campfire.

I apologize for the latency of these posts. I didn't realize internet and cell service in WV is nonexistent. We get excited whenever a 4G signal is present when driving around.  Our phones go nuts when we hit these pockets of access.
